“The only person who is educated is the one
who has learned how to learn and change”
- Carl Rogers
Education is fundamental for achieving full
potential for an individual and an opportunity for socio-economic mobility
leading to better lives and prosperous country INDIA. For achieving the target
set by India according to Sustainable Development Goals which ensures inclusive
and equitable quality education and promotes lifelong learning opportunities by
2030, India needed reconfiguration and changes in the education system which
wasn’t in sync with current
trends/Technologies.
After a long duration of 34 years the National
Education Policy(NEP-2020) has been implemented by the Government of India with a vision of new India with infinite possibilities and hope of innovation and
creation by the youth of the nation.
We live in the 21st century where
technology is growing at lightning speed with innovations and its aspects such as AI, Machine learning, Robotics.
This technology is highly sustainable adds value to operations and
requires more skilled individuals and has taken over tedious tasks requiring
less/no skills. In order to keep in sync with the world, there was much needed in a system that will affect generations to come shaping INDIA’s future.
The NEP 2020 focuses particularly on the
following points mentioned below keeping the recent scenario of High Tech
World/Future in Mind.
- · To foster learning techniques among students with much-needed qualities such as critical thinking, reasoning, and rational thinking, curiosity to learn, Problem-solving, and many more.
- · No boundaries between arts, sciences and other streams resulting in the all-round development of individual and developing a system which not only gives materialistic Knowledge but also knowledge of self.
- · Developing ethics, human values, life skills, Diversity, synergy in the curriculum.
- · Regulating the framework to ensure integrity, transparency and resource efficiency of the system by continuous review and evaluation.
School Education (The base on which a students learning is structured):
Current Scenario :
- The previous policy is a burden to students and focused on making students remember than to think and learn how to learn the required changes in it.
- We are currently in a situation where over 5 crore students (Data by various organizations) do not have basic literacy and numeracy which is a necessary prerequisite foundation for learning.NEP 2020 has a primary focus to develop Foundational literacy and Numeracy by 2025. This is the first step in creating an Unshakable foundation for their future learning.
- Counter to traditional(previous )academic structure NEP has restructured school education on the basis of ages belonging to 3-18 years as 5+3+3+4 years which includes four strata mentioned.
1.
Foundational :(Preschool , Age [3-6] + Class 1-2 , Age [6-8].) (- represents
Range)
·
Preschool: Strong base of Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE)
from age 3 is also included, which is aimed at promoting better overall
learning, development, and well-being.
·
Class 1-2: Foundational stage
for optimal learning providing better meals through various programs to prevent malnourishment which will create a healthy environment and a strong base for a student to learn.
·
Creating foundational literacy
and numerical capability for smooth learning in the future.
2.
Preparatory(Class 3-5 , Age [8-11].)
·
Activity-based learning through
games, puzzles and discovering other
creative ways to improve cognitive abilities, critical thinking abilities and
problem-solving from an early age.
3.
Middle(Class 6-8 , Age
[11-14].)
·
Introduction to various
subjects in depth by subject experts such as Mathematics, Science, Arts, Social
sciences and humanities through experiential learning by various technological
modes.
·
Informal Vocational training at
schools to teach students about various technical
Aspects of daily life by live demonstration and hands-on
training.
4.
Secondary (Class 9-12, Age
[14-18].)
·
This stage consists of a more
flexible system for students to choose any subjects of interest where subjects
like arts, humanities, Life sciences will not be considered extracurricular
thus exposing them to multidisciplinary skills
and higher thinking ability for overall growth.
Exams and Pattern for them :
·
School exams would be conducted
for only three levels. Class 3,5 and 8.
·

retain but will adapt changes through new National Assessment Centre

so.
Higher Education:
·
After the secondary phase, students
will have the option to get their desired field of interest by appearing for a
common entrance test required for higher studies. (Conducted by National Testing
Agency(NTA) , applicable from 2022)
·
Multidisciplinary Bachelors the program will be implemented with no rigid separation between fields of study.
This idea came back from our great learning ancient universities like Nalanda
and Takshakshila which emphasizes knowledge of many arts.
·
All Higher Education Indian Universities
such as IIT will become multidisciplinary in nature and the same for other
universities of a specific domain and affiliated institutes will be phased out in
next 15 years giving greater autonomy to institutes to structure their curriculum
and award degrees.
·
A common regulatory commission
will be formed merging current entities such as UGC and AICTE.
·
Top 100 Universities from the world will be
allowed to operate in India.
·
National Research Centre will
be formed fostering a culture of research among students in various discipline
and the required criteria will be made for smooth functioning.
NEP 2020 is a great step for making INDIA a
developed and prosperous nation. NEP aims to sync the system hand in hand to
current technological trends by inculcating the culture for the same from
foundational stages. This requires a lot of changes in the entire system mainly for
the teachers imparting this knowledge and it is mentioned in the policy how it
could be achieved.
INDIA is a great country - full of energy
and zeal, of youth. Though NEP aims to create education accessible to everyone
its implementation may have some challenges, the only way to overcome these
challenges are to make people more aware and this is possible only by Youth like
us who will work to overcome the challenges and bring the change we want to
see.
